The battle for supremacy in the Lagos Island Division of the prestigious Spires 5Aside tournament exploded into life over the weekend, as eight determined teams lit up the Stables Sports Centre, Bode Thomas, Surulere, in a thrilling showcase of grassroots football at its finest.
From end-to-end drama to last-minute heroics, the divisional rounds did not disappoint, with four teams now booking their place in the eagerly anticipated semi-finals.

The day’s curtain-raiser featured a tense clash between Greater Tomorrow FC and FC Rainbow. After an evenly contested affair ended 1-1 in regulation time, it was Greater Tomorrow who held their nerve in the shootout, dispatching FC Rainbow 2-0 on penalties to punch the first ticket to the semi-finals.
In the second fixture, tournament newcomers Dolphin FC stunned many with a blistering first-half performance that saw them go two goals up against 2Odds FC. But experience would ultimately prevail, as the trio of Uche, David Ojo, and David orchestrated a second-half comeback, netting three unanswered goals to turn the tide and send 2Odds FC through to the next round.

The third game of the day saw Young Strikers FC take on Kings FC in a tightly contested battle. A solitary goal from Yusuf proved decisive, securing a hard-fought 1-0 win for Young Strikers and a place in the final four.
In what was billed as the tie of the round, defending champions White Tigers FC faced a stern test against a fearless Uncle Michael FC side. The underdogs matched the holders stride for stride in a nervy encounter. However, in the dying minutes of the match, Ojo Rahman produced a moment of pure composure slotting home a clinical finish after a sweeping team move to seal a 1-0 victory for the champions.

With the semi-final stage now set, fans are in for another treat as the competition resumes on Wednesday, August 6, at the same venue.
