Spires 5-ASide Division Storms Ikorodu with Thrilling Opening Encounters
By Victor Ottah
The much-anticipated Spires 5-ASide Ikorodu Divisional games made its emphatic debut at the Deeonis Football Court, NITEL, Ota Ona, Ikorodu, today, with a pulsating display of grassroots football that lived up to its billing.

The opening match of the day saw Marine Boys FC send a resounding statement of intent with a dominant 6–2 victory over Better Tomorrow FC. Captain Saliba opened the scoring, setting the tone for what became a goal fest. Friday added a brace, while Yusuf stole the spotlight with a clinical hat-trick. Despite a spirited effort from Better Tomorrow’s Jamiu, who netted twice, it was not enough to halt the Marines charge into the next round.
In the day’s second fixture, last year’s Divisional runners-up, Diamond FC were handed a rude awakening by debutants New Generation FC in what turned out to be a one-sided affair. Bernard gave Diamond FC an early lead, but their joy was short-lived as New Generation launched a relentless assault, putting 11 past a stunned Diamond defense. Morocco was the standout performer, netting four times, with Joshua adding a hat-trick. Emeka and Chimobi chipped in with two goals apiece, leaving Diamond FC to exit the tournament in dramatic fashion.

Attention now shifts to Sunday’s fixtures as the final set of first-round matches take center stage. Orion FC and Leon FC will lock horns with Opopo Ona-Iwa Mimo FC at 12 noon, followed by the clash between Oladunjoye FC and Evagrin FC at 1 pm—both ties are also set to be played at the Deeonis Court.
With the level of intensity and talent already on display, this year’s edition of the Spires 5-ASide promises to be one for the ages.
The Sei-final is expected to hold on Wednesday while the final takes place on Saturday.
