Goals Galore in Epe as Spires 5-Aside Tournament Produces Explosive Knockout Clashes
By Victor Ottah
The knockout stages of the Spires 5-Aside Divisional Tournament delivered a thrilling showcase of grassroots football in Epe, as top teams battled fiercely for a place in the semifinals of one of the region’s most competitive community competitions.
In the standout result of the round, Crown FA sent a strong message to the rest of the field with a commanding 6–2 victory over defending champions Papa SA. The emphatic win not only ended Papa SA’s title defence but also underlined Crown FA’s growing as serious contenders for this year’s crown.

Angso Spot were equally ruthless, dismantling Top FC 6–1 in a one-sided affair that showcased their attacking depth and clinical finishing. Meanwhile, Prodigy FC edged past last year’s finalists, Net Breaker FC, in a dramatic encounter that ended 3–3 in regulation time before Prodigy held their nerve to triumph via penalties.
The most closely contested fixture of the round saw Prime Eleven FA secure a hard-fought 5–4 victory over Ayobami FC in a tense, end-to-end clash that kept spectators on edge until the final whistle.
The Spires 5-Aside Tournament, played across multiple divisions within Lagos widely known as the Centre of Excellence continues to serve as a vital platform for emerging football talent. The competition offers significant incentives, with winners in each division set to receive ₦500,000, runners-up ₦300,000, and third-place teams ₦100,000. Additionally, the tournament’s highest goal scorer will be rewarded with ₦50,000.
Beyond the prize money, the stakes remain high for participating teams. The top three teams from each division will qualify to represent their divisions at the Spires 5-Aside State Championship later in the year. This progression opens doors for players to attract attention from both local and international scouts, as part of Spires’ broader initiative to identify, develop, and promote young football talent across Nigeria.
Attention now turns to the semifinals, scheduled to take place on May 6, 2026, at the STS Pitch along the Epe Expressway in Bogije, Ibeju-Lekki. The fixtures promise more excitement, with Prime Eleven FA set to face Crown FA at 12 noon, followed by Prodigy FC against Angso Spot at 1 pm.

With momentum building and the quality of play rising at each stage, the Spires 5-Aside Tournament continues to reaffirm its status as a cornerstone of grassroots football development, drawing fans and stakeholders alike to witness the future stars of the game.
