GRASSROOTS SPORTS DEVELOPMENT: LSSC ENCOURAGED TO PARTNER SPIRES 5ASIDE TO DEEPEN TALENT IDENTIFICATION
By Victor Ottah
As the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) intensifies efforts to strengthen grassroots talent identification and development, stakeholders have continued to advocate for strategic partnerships that align with the Commission’s long-term vision for sustainable sports growth.
Following recent disclosures by the Director-General of LSSC, Mr. Lekan Fatodu, on the Commission’s commitment to innovative programmes, school sports, and community-based initiatives, attention has been drawn to the potential value of partnering with Spires 5aside, a fast-growing grassroots football development platform.

Spires 5aside, known for its structured youth-focused football programmes, has consistently provided competitive and inclusive opportunities for young talents at the community level. The initiative aligns strongly with LSSC’s renewed focus on early talent discovery, athlete development pathways, and youth empowerment through sports.

This potential collaboration is further reinforced by earlier remarks from Mr. Fatodu following a courtesy visit by the Spires delegation, led by its Chairman, Dr. Alibay Bankole. At the meeting, the Director-General reportedly commended the Spires initiative for its grassroots-driven model and reiterated the Commission’s openness to partnerships that complement Lagos State’s sports development objectives.

With LSSC planning major programmes such as the inaugural Intermediate Games, National Youth Games, and expanded community-based competitions, a partnership with Spires 5aside could offer a ready-made platform for identifying raw talents, especially at the entry level of football development.
Such collaboration would also support the Commission’s emphasis on school sports and grassroots structures as foundational pillars for long-term athlete progression, while providing young athletes with consistent exposure, mentorship, and competitive experience.
As Lagos State continues to position itself as a leading hub for sports excellence in Nigeria, partnerships with credible grassroots organisations like Spires 5aside could play a critical role in translating policy direction into measurable outcomes—ensuring that emerging talents are discovered early, nurtured effectively, and given clear pathways to success.
