By Victor Ottah
The battle for supremacy in Lagos’ most exciting grassroots football event — the Spires 5-Aside Naija Street Soccer Tournament — has reached a fever pitch, as four formidable sides booked their places in the semi-finals following a thrilling quarterfinal weekend.

Defending champions White Tigers continued their quest for back-to-back titles with a hard-fought 3–2 victory over All Saints FC, while Papa SA edged Blood and Sand FC 7–6 in a nerve-racking penalty shootout after both sides played out a 1–1 draw in regulation time.
Elsewhere, Chekas United showed grit and precision to secure a 2–1 win over Wasola FC, and Greater Tomorrow FC outlasted New Generation FC in another penalty drama, prevailing 3–1 after a 2–2 stalemate at full time.

With the quarterfinal drama now behind them, attention shifts to the semi-final showdowns scheduled for Wednesday, November 12, at the Stables Sports Centre, Bode Thomas, Surulere. Defending champions White Tigers will lock horns with the youthful and ambitious Greater Tomorrow FC, while Chekas United face a spirited Papa SA side in what promises to be a fierce battle for a spot in Saturday’s grand finale.
Tournament initiator, Dr. Bankole Alibay, expressed satisfaction with the level of competition and excitement surrounding the event, assuring fans that the finale would be a celebration of football and street culture at its finest.
“The final will be one of the best blends of football, music, and street culture ever seen in Nigeria,” Dr. Alibay said. “All is in place to ensure an unforgettable experience. You simply have to be there this Saturday to witness it.”

Now in its second season, the Spires 5-Aside Naija Street Soccer Tournament has continued to grow in stature, drawing participation from 16 teams across five divisions in Lagos — a testament to the city’s thriving street football scene and the tournament’s growing impact on local talent development.
