By Victor Ottah
The Spires 5-aside Tournament reached its thrilling climax in the Ikorodu division, where Orion and Leon FC emerged victorious with a commanding 6-3 win over New Generation FC in an action-packed final that showcased exceptional skill and dominance.
A goal apiece from Emmanuel and Seyi, alongside braces from Kenny and Owolabi, secured the victory for the champions, Orion and Leon FC. Despite a stellar performance from New Generation FC, who were the highest-scoring team in the competition, they had to settle for second place in the highly competitive tournament.

In the battle for third place, Coach Agunbiade Aliya’s team, Evagrin FC, produced a remarkable performance to claim the final spot in the upcoming Spires 5-aside State Championship. Their determination and grit saw them narrowly edge out Marine Boys FC in a match that was delayed briefly due to heavy rainfall.

The rain failed to dampen the spirits of either team, as the match quickly turned into a downpour of goals. The standout moment came from Femi of Evagrin FC, who delivered an outstanding individual performance, scoring an incredible seven goals. A brace from Obinna also proved pivotal, as Evagrin FC triumphed 9-8 in a thrilling encounter that kept spectators on their feet.

As the Ikorodu division’s champions, Orion and Leon FC were awarded a cash prize of ₦500,000, while New Generation FC, as the runners-up, took home ₦300,000. Additionally, they were recognized for their attacking prowess with a further ₦50,000 as the highest-scoring team in the division. Evagrin FC, as third-place finishers, earned ₦100,000 for their efforts. Femi, the tournament’s standout goal scorer with 12 goals in 3 games, was rewarded with ₦50,000 for his remarkable seven-goal performance.

With the Ikorodu division now concluded, the Spires 5-aside Tournament moves to Epe, where the search for the next champions will begin. The Epe division games are set to kick off on May 24, with teams from across the division vying for glory and a place in the state championship.
